Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team was shut out by the Davidson Wildcats, 7-0, in the Catamounts' final regular-season match Sunday at the Reid Gym Courts. Western heads into the Southern Conference Championship with a 6-12 overall record and a 1-8 SoCon mark.
Western claimed a victory in the number three position in doubles action with Kristin Cotton and Katie VanEwyk winning over Katherine Hatch and Sarah Borkowski, 8-6. However, Davidson earned the first point of the match with the Fillnow twins (Kelly and Meghan) defeating Shannon Zalinski and Megan Bechtold, 8-3, and Meggie Patterson and Lindsey Powel beating Rocio Perez and Erin Johnson, 8-2.
The Wildcats claimed all six singles points for the sweep, defeating all six Catamounts in straight sets. After losing her first set, 6-3, Perez attempted a comeback in the second, but fell 7-5. Zalinski also gave a good effort in the number six position, only losing her first set by a score of 7-5. She dropped the second set, 6-2.
The Catamounts head to Charleston, S.C., for the conference championship, which begins on Wednesday, April 16.
