Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina dropped a 2-0 decision verses Georgia State Monday afternoon at Schrader Field in the team's 2003 home opener.
The Panthers got on the board early when junior forward Sarah Feske slipped one past Catamount goalkeeper Tina Weaver at 1:26 in the first period. The Panthers' second goal would come in the second period when Georgia State sophomore Liz Gardner scored on an unassisted shot from 10 yards out.
The Georgia State held the Cats to just 10 shots, while Panther goalkeeper Alexa Pasquarelli recorded four saves. Western Carolina allowed 14 shots; however, Weaver scooped up six saves in the match.
"I am disappointed with today's outcome; the team played hard but we did not play smart," head coach Debbie Hensley said. "Georgia State was just better than we were today."
The Catamounts return to action this weekend at the Middle Tennessee State Tournament in Murfreesboro, Tenn. WCU's first match is slated for 2:30 pm on Friday, Sept. 5, against Alabama A&M. In the team's final match of the tournament, the Cats face Middle Tennessee at 3 pm on Sunday.
