Lynchburg, Va. - Down 1-0 early, Western Carolina (3-4-1) put up two answered goals to pick up the 2-1 win against Liberty (1-6-1), Monday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty got on the board first as senior Rachel Lyndon slipped a shot by Catamount goalkeeper Tina Weaver at 21:29 in the match. However, it did not take long for Western to answer as a minute later junior Brittany Bennefield blasted a 30 yard shot from her defender position and got it past Liberty goalkeeper Sonia Rodriguez to tie the match at 1-1.
In the second half, The Cats wasted little time getting back on the board when, in the 51st minute, freshman Stephanie Svoboda took a cross from sophomore Megan Chambers and found the back of the net to post the game winning goal.
The Lady Flames could not find a way to get a shot past Weaver in the second half as she picked up eight saves in the match. The Catamounts finished the contest posting 15 shots while Liberty recorded 13.
"This was the most physical match we have had this season, the girls showed a lot of heart and fought very hard", head coach Debbie Hensley said. "Today we produced the most consistent effort of the season, and I am very proud of them".
The Cats return to action Thursday, September 25 at home versus Chattanooga. The match is scheduled to start at 4 pm and fans are asked to park by the picnic area and walk across the bridge, due to construction for the new soccer, track and tennis complex.
