Anna Betton's goal with five minutes left to play pushed the Southern Conference leading Furman Paladins to a 3-2 win over Western Carolina Monday afternoon at Schrader Field.
Betton started the scoring for Furman (6-7-0, 4-1-0) as she broke through the Catamount defense at the 11:15 mark to give the Paladins a 1-0 margin. Western Carolina (3-7-3, 1-3-3) evened the score 18 minutes later as junior Natalie Turgeon crossed to sophomore Stephanie Svoboda who found the back of the net for her sixth goal on the season.
Five minutes into the second half, freshman Heather Dittmer provided the Cats with a 2-1 lead as she collected her first goal on the season. However, Paladin senior April Raymer evened the scored for the second time during the game as she tallied a goal on a penalty kick at the 59:44 mark. The score remained tied until Betton claimed the game winning goal for Furman with just five minutes remaining in the match.
The Paladins outshot the Catamounts 13 to six, led by Betton with five shots, while Svoboda led the Cats with two.
Western sophomore goalkeeper Alesha Row scooped up five saves on the afternoon, while Furman junior Andie Hinshaw grabbed one save against the Cats.
"I am very proud of our performance today," WCU head coach Debbie Hensley said. "Though we did not come out with the win, the effort we had today was excellent. We need to make some adjustments and come back with another strong effort Friday."
Western Carolina women's soccer returns to action on Friday, Oct. 15 as they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to face the Spartans, with match time set for 5:30 pm. Furman hosts Elon in Southern Conference action on Friday, Oct. 15 with match time set for 7:00 pm.
