WCU Golf Shatters Record; Stand Four Shots Out With 18 Holes Left at JMU

Signal Mountain, Tenn. - Inclement weather forced the cancellation of the final 18 holes today at the annual Sonic/Chattanooga Intercollegiate, leaving Western Carolina in 11th place after its first-day, 36-hole score of 599.

Tennessee Tech and Belmont, who each shot an eight-under 560 on day one, were declared the team champions. Tennessee Tech's Braxton Hunter and Morehead State's Ryan Martin also benefited from the rainout. The duo tied for medalist honors after leading the field after two rounds with scores of eight-under 134. Evansville's Kyle Reddington and Belmont's Brenton Flynn tied for third at four-under 138 and were two of nine golfers who finished with under par scores.

For the second time this season, Western Carolina freshman Matt Dowdy led the Catamounts, tying for 32nd with rounds of 74-73 and a 36-hole total of 147. He was closely followed by sophomore Tripp Morrow's 148 (37th-t after rounds of 75-73 on day one. Junior Blake Wray was three shots off Dowdy's pace, tying for 45th with a 150. Juniors Chase Kress and Keith Tyburski rounded out the Catamounts' scoring with a 154 and 158, respectively.

Western Carolina will return to action Oct. 29-31 at its own Shoot-Out at Wild Wing, played at Wild Wing Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Western will then conclude its fall schedule Nov. 7-9 at its own WCU/Sapphire Valley Inivtational.
