Women's Soccer 10/24/2004 12:00:00 AM Catamount Athletics WCU Soccer Defeated By Appalachian State 2-1 in Overtime Oct. 24, 2004 Final Stats Boone, N.C. - Freshman Courtney O'Brien's golden goal less than two minutes into the second overtime period completed Appalachian State University's 2-1 come-from-behind win against Western Carolina University Sunday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Catamounts jumped out to an early advantage on the strength of sophomore Stephanie Svoboda's score in the 12th minute. Svoboda gathered a corner kick from senior Brittany Bennefield and sent the ball under a diving Breland Meany for her seventh goal of the season to give WCU a 1-0 lead. Appalachian senior Jennifer Rudy netted her eighth goal of the season to tie the score with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation. Following a collision between Catamount goalkeeper Alesha Row and a WCU defender, Rudy blasted the ball into the open net from 22 yards out. In overtime Mountaineer Whitney Southard launched a free kick into the box where O'Brien was waiting at the far post and headed the ball past Row at the 101:46 mark to give ASU the win. Row stopped 10 shots for WCU, while Meany registered six saves on the day. Western Carolina hosts The Citadel in Southern Conference action on Friday, October 29 with match time set for 4:00 pm at Schrader Field. Print Friendly Version
