Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer, led by two goals each from sophomore Stephanie Svoboda and junior Natasha Moore, defeated The Citadel, 8-1, Friday afternoon in Southern Conference action at Schrader Field.
The Catamounts came out strong with Svoboda notching her first goal of the match on a pass from senior Brittany Bennefield just three minutes into regulation. Moore followed up Svoboda's goal with her own at the 6:43 mark as she broke away at midfield to give the Cats a 2-0 margin over the Bulldogs. Svoboda then extended the WCU margin to 3-0 at the 15:33 mark as she headed in a pass from Moore. Junior Casey Davis found the back of the net on a pass sequence from junior Natalie Turgeon to Moore, to bring the lead to 4-0.
Citadel sophomore Holli Knox netted the Bulldogs' only goal of the game at the 41:11 mark on a pass from junior Julie Austin to bring the score to 4-1 at halftime.
Just under 10 minutes into the second half (54:52), sophomore Keevy Harris launched a corner kick to freshman Heather Dittmer, who then headed the ball to a waiting Moore, which she slipped past the Citadel goalkeeper for her second goal of the match. Moore's goal was quickly (55:00) followed by an own goal by The Citadel to push Western's advantage, to 6-1. Turgeon grabbed her third goal of the season on a pass from freshman Lauren Atkinson at the 62:43 mark to give the Cats a 7-1 advantage. Junior Megan Chambers finished the scoring series for the Cats at 86:35 as she found a pass from freshman Jamie Hopkins.
The Citadel junior starting goalkeeper Angie Ellenwood had one save on the afternoon in 22:40 of play and Bulldog freshman Brit Bunnell grabbed four in her 67:20 of play to give The Citadel five saves against the Cats. Western Carolina sophomore goalkeeper Alesha Row scooped up one save for the Catamounts.
"I was very pleased with our play," head women's soccer coach Debbie Hensley said. "We demonstrated a high level of intensity and assertiveness. We want to finish strong Sunday and see where that leaves us."
WCU soccer finishes out regular season play this Sunday, October 31 as they host the Georgia Southern Eagles at Schrader Field with match time set for 2:00 pm. Prior to the match, the University will honor its lone senior, Brittany Bennefield. The Citadel concludes its season at home on Sunday, October 31, against UNC Greensboro, with match time set for 1:00 pm.
