Johnson City, Tenn. - Western Carolina women's soccer tied East Tennessee State, 1-1, in a double overtime game on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference action. With the tie the Catamounts are now 2-6-3 overall and 0-1-3 in the conference, while the Buccaneers are 3-4-2, 0-1-2.
Both teams came out fighting and looking for their first conference win of the season. Scoring opened in the first half with a goal from Western Carolina's Natalie Turgeon. Megan Chambers passed the ball up to Turgeon who put it in on the left side of the goal past the ETSU defense. Turgeon's goal came at 24:38 of the first half.
The Catamounts would continue the control of the first half with four shots to the Buccaneers' two, but the score would remain at 1-0 in favor of WCU heading into the second half.
In the second half Buccaneer Aubree Snyder put the ball in the net on a header after receiving a cross from sophomore Alexandra Schwark at 67:58 to bring about the tie score.
The remainder of the second half would be filled with scoring opportunities, but both teams kept a strong defense to send it into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Catamounts dominated making six shots while the Bucs were held without a shot. At the end of the period, though, the score remained tied 1-1, forcing a second overtime.
The deadlock would continue through the second overtime session to end the game with the 1-1 final score.
Western led the game in shots with 17 to the Buccaneers' 14. Catamount goalkeeper Jennifer Deck made six saves, while ETSU goalkeeper Chrissy Parks had seven saves.
The Catamounts travel to Davidson on Wednesday, October 6, to face the Wildcats in a Southern Conference match-up. Match time is set to begin at 7:00 pm at Alumni Stadium.
