Cullowhee, N.C. - Senior forward Jennifer Gardner led the way with her second-consecutive double-double as the Western Carolina Lady Catamounts found their edge on defense en route to a 74-56 victory over the Davidson Wildcats Monday night in the Ramsey Center.

Gardner, who was honored prior to the game for surpassing the 1,000-point plateau, scored a season-high 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in 21 minutes of action. Her freshman front court counterpart, Jessika Johnson, added 13 points and five boards in her first career start.

Freshman guard Leah Barrier added eight points, including a perfect 2-for-2 on 3-pointers with Monique Dawson and senior guard Shaketia Barnes each contributed seven points.

After being held scoreless in the previous game, senior Ki-Ki Glass flashed through the lane for five points while dishing out four assists and swiping a pair of steals.

Davidson (5-4, 3-1 SoCon) scored the first four points of the contest before Dawson connected on her only 3-pointer on the night, pulling the Lady Catamounts to within one. After back-to-back missed jumpers by the Wildcats on the other end, Glass put Western ahead for good when she slashed through the lane and was fouled, nailing the free throw to complete the three-point play.

The Lady Catamounts (6-5, 2-3 SoCon) would lead by as many as 12 on two occasions in the first half, including the halftime margin of 36-24.

In the second half, Davidson pulled to within six at 44-38, utilizing a 12-4 run over four and a half minutes. Western responded, however, with an 18-3 run over the next six minutes to pull ahead by 21, and held on with the lead never dwindling under 14 points down the stretch.

Western held the Wildcats to 32 percent from the floor, including a dismal 15 percent from behind the 3-point arc while countering with a 50-percent showing in each half.

Davidson had two players record double figures led by the second career double-double of Emily Callahan. The senior finished with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore Katie Hamilton added 11 points and eight boards in the losing effort.

Freshman center Jessika Johnson scored 13 points in her first career start Monday night versus Davidson.

Western Carolina will return to action following the Christmas holiday as it travels to Radford on Friday, December 31. Davidson will travel to Blacksburg, Va., to participate in the Lady Luck Classic where they will face Southern Mississippi on Wednesday, December 29.
