Final Stats

Boone, N.C. - Western Carolina's Kyle Greathouse sank a pair of free throws with just two seconds left in the game to give the Catamounts a 64-62 win over Appalachian State before a Fox Sports South Net regional television audience. Greathouse finished with a career-high 22 points, making 6-of-7 shots from 3-point range.

Appalachian State trailed for most of the game and was behind 59-47 until Noah Brown hit back to back 3-pointers to close the gap to 59-53 with 1:38 left in regulation. Chris McFarland hit a hit a pair of baskets and, following a WCU turnover, Derek Thomas slammed home a basket with 46 seconds left to tie the game at 61-61.

Western's Kevin Martin went to the free throw line with 16 seconds left and converted one of the two at the line, giving WCU a 62-61 lead. The Mountaineers had a shot to take the lead, but a 3-point attempt by Matt Jones ended up going out of bounds. Greathouse was fouled on the inbounds play and his free throws gave WCU a 64-61 lead. WCU sophomore Corey Muirhead fouled McFarland with three-tenths of a second left, keeping ASU from attempting a game-tying 3-pointer and forcing the Apps to at least make one free throw, attempt to miss the second and tip-in a game-tying basket. McFarland did make the first one, but the second free throw came up short and WCU escaped with the 64-62 win.

Western Carolina held onto a lead early in the contest, up 15-11 at the 13:00 mark. After trading baskets for several minutes, Appalachian gained the lead at 5:34 on a Corwin Davis three-pointer, but the Catamounts answered with a jumper from Martin to regain the lead, 23-22. Free throws from WCU helped extend their lead to four, before Davis hit another trey at 2:25 to bring the Apps within one. A block by McFarland translated into another ASU lead, one of seven lead changes in the first half, as Demetrius Scott tipped in a shot to put the Apps up 27-26. The advantage seesawed again as Martin's jumper added two of his first-half 13 points. Scott stole the ball with 15 seconds left in the half, and Derek Thomas laid it in to give ASU a 29-28 edge going into the lockerroom.

Clint Deas sank a free throw to open the second half, and then two from the line from WCU's Greathouse knotted the game at the 16:58 mark. There were two more free throws for the Catamounts before Herb Jones contributed the first field goal of the half, a dunk at 15:14. Western would go on a 15-4 run that saw the visitors up 42-34 at 11:21. Davis nailed a 3-pointer, then Scott's bucket pulled the Mountaineers within six points. The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes of play, but the Appalachian deficit was never less than five until the final minute.

Martin led all scorers with 24 points and came away with a career-high six steals. Muirhead contributed 11 points and eight rebounds, while David Berghoefer had seven points and seven rebounds.

For Appalachian, Brown netted 13, while McFarland and Thomas each scored 10. Brown also had five assists.

The Catamounts host Furman on Monday, (Feb. 16). Tip-off is set for 7 pm in the Ramsey Center.
