Cullowhee, N.C. - Tusculum College, ranked 25th in the nation in the latest Div. II poll, outlasted Western Carolina Sunday afternoon in women's tennis action as the Pioneers extended their unbeaten record to 14-0 with a 5-2 victory over the Catamounts (5-10).
Kristin Cotton and Katie VanEwyk teamed up to defeat Gabriela Mora and Claudia Bolivar 8-6 in doubles action in the No. 2 position. However, the Pioneers claimed the other two matches with sweeps of Rocio Perez and Erin Johnson in the No. 1 position and Elysa Montgomery and April Yount in the third position.
Kristin Munn and VanEwyk both won their singles matches in straight sets with Munn winning 6-2, 6-0 and VanEwyk winning by scores of 6-3, 6-1 to hand Jobria McCracken her first loss of the season at No. 5. Tusculum won at the first, third, fourth and sixth positions in singles play, though Johnson and Cotton both tried to claw their way back. Each fell in their second sets by a score of 7-5.
The Catamounts return to Southern Conference action this Wednesday (Mar. 31) as WCU heads to Davidson for a 3:00 pm start.
