Phoenix Women's Tennis Tames Catamounts

Elon, N.C. - Elon claimed two of the three doubles matches and then captured five of the six singles matches on its way to a 6-1 Southern Conference women's tennis victory against Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Kelly Fleck and Alli Benton beat Rocio Perez and Kristin Munn 8-2 at No. 2 doubles while Melissa Holland and Elizabeth Kristofak defeated Elysa Montgomery and April Yount 8-2 at No. 3 as the Phoenix (3-8 overall, 2-6 SoCon) picked up the SoCon victory. The Catamounts (5-13, 0-9) received a victory at No. 1 doubles when Kristin Cotton and Katie VanEwyk edged Evin Prelec and Jennifer Fulmer 8-6 in the duo's debut at the first position.

WCU scored at No. 1 singles after Perez got past Prelec 6-4, 6-3. Elon swept the rest of the singles matches with Fleck (6-2, 6-3 over Munn at No. 2), Elizabeth Kernodle (6-1, 6-2 over Erin Johnson at No. 3), Fulmer (6-0, 6-2 over Cotton at No. 4), Kristofak (6-3, 6-2 over Van Ewyk at No. 5) and Holland (6-0, 6-0 over Yount at No. 6) all picking up wins.

The Catamounts return to action when they host Chattanooga at 2:00 pm on April 13 to close out the regular-season.
