Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer shutout East Carolina 2-0 Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Schrader Field.
This marks this second meeting between WCU and ECU, with the Catamount win evening the series record between the two teams at one a piece.
After battling to a scoreless tie after one half of play, the Cat's capitalized on increased offensive pressure in the second half. Freshman forward Lauren Atkinson beat a Pirate defender and goalkeep Lindsi Troxler at the top of the box and found the back of the net just seven minutes into the second half to give the Catamounts a 1-0 lead. The goal was Atkinson's first in her collegiate career.
Late in the second half sophomore Stephanie Svoboda drove the ball down into Pirate territory, past two defenders, before dishing off to Atkinson. The freshman forward then crossed the ball back to Svoboda for Western's second goal of the game, and Svoboda's team-high third on the season.
The Catamounts outshot the Pirates 13-6, with freshman Heather Dittmer leading the way with three. Svoboda, Atkinson, and Megan Chambers each added a pair as well.
"This was a great end to our weekend," Head Coach Debbie Hensley said. "We created scoring opportunities and then executed on them. I am looking forward to us carrying this momentum into our conference play."
WCU returns to action this Friday, Oct. 1 against Elon in Southern Conference play. The match time is set to begin at 4:00 pm at Schrader Field.
