Cullowhee, N.C. -
The Western Carolina women's soccer team scored two goals in the first 11 minutes of the first half, then held on to defeat Coastal Carolina, 2-1 at the Catamount Athletic Complex Saturday night. The win brings Western to 10-3-0 overall, while Coastal Carolina drops 10-4-0 overall.
Western got on the board first when freshman Arlan Whittle served a corner kick from the right side which senior Casey Davis won and turned on net. Her shot was blocked by a Coastal defender and sophomore Lauren Atkinson one-timed the rebound. Atkinson's offering was also deflected where junior Keevy Harris gathered the loose ball and scored the first goal of the evening, her second of the season.
On the second goal, it was again Harris who won ball at top of goal box, dropping a pass to sophomore Heather Dittmer. The Marietta, Ga., native corralled the loose ball and fired a hot shot that just squirted away from Chanticleers keeper who had made initial stop into the open cage.
After finding themselves behind quickly, 2-0, the Chanticleers answered with a tally of their own a minute and a half later. Earning a corner kick, Coastal played the ball short to set the offense. Senior Bobbie Parsons played give and go with classmate Kristina Fisher to split Western's defense. Parsons uncorked a shot into the upper right corner of the net that sailed away from the outstretched arms of Catamount keeper, Alesha Row, who finished with a pair of saves in the win.
The Catamounts out shot the Chants, 15-10, with a dozen of the offerings for Western coming in the first half of play. Coastal earned a slim, 4-3, advantage in shots in the second stanza as defense and intensity all around was picked up. WCU also earned a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Catamounts will return to the Catamount Athletic Complex on Friday, October 14 to take on Southern Conference rival, Appalachian State at 7:00 pm.
