Western Carolina Tennis Falls to NC State, UNC Wilmington in Spring Openers

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Catamount women's tennis team opened its spring season on Sunday, falling in falling in straight sets to both North Carolina State and UNC Wilmington at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh,N.C.

NCSU won both matches on the day to improve to 2-0, while UNC Wilmington finished 1-1 and Western Carolina concluded play, 0-2.

In the first match of the day, the Catamounts were swept by NC State, 7-0. In doubles, the WCU team of sophomore Trish Hanson and freshman Mariona Trilla Jane were defeated by NCSU junior Allison Barry and senior Nandita Chandrasekar at No. 1, 8-1, while sophomore Susanna Sjokvist and freshman teammate Holly Stocks fell to junior Lauren Barry and freshman Arielle Von Strolley by the same count, 8-1, in the second seed doubles match, giving the first point to the `Pack.

Western dropped each match in singles competition in straight sets. Stocks fell to junior Agustina Arechavaleta, 6-0, 6-0, with Trilla Jane defeated by freshman Alejandra Guerra at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0. Sjokvist lost to sophomore Elin Stahl Johansson at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0, while Hanson fell to Chandrasekar, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1.

Later in the day, Western fell in straight sets to UNC Wilmington, 7-0. Sjokvist fought hard before falling, 6-3, 6-2, to Molly Molony at No. 2, with Hanson falling at No. 1 to Lindsey Hess by identical tallies of 6-1. Trilla Jane fell 6-0, 6-3 to the Seahawks' Cassie Martin at No. 3, with Stocks falling to Kristin Mears, 6-0, 6-0.

Sjokvist teamed with Stocks in doubles competition, falling 8-4 to the team of Kristin Mears and Katie Carlson. The team of Hanson and Trilla Jane fell to Hess and Lauren Isenhour, 8-1, in the No. 1 doubles.

The Catamounts return to action on February 18, visiting Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.
