Greensboro, N.C. - Junior Heather Dittmer scored her team-high fourth goal of the season which pulled Western Carolina Catamounts even at one-goal apiece with the preseason Southern Conference favorite, UNC Greensboro Spartans, in a match that battled through two overtime sessions before being called a draw, 1-1, at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The draw snaps Western's four-match losing skid to the Spartans and is the second tie this season for the Catamounts.
UNC Greensboro (3-7-2, 2-0-1) went on the board first early in the second half. Heather Deutschle sent the ball to Shannon Donovan just passed midfield where she passed to freshman Kelly Attayek. The rookie drew Catamount senior goal keeper, Alesha Row, off the goal line and shot it past her to score in the 50th minute and put UNCG up 1-0. The goal was Attayek's first collegiate goal.
Western Carolina (5-5-2, 1-1-1) would get the equalizer off a corner kick in the 69th minute of the match. Freshman Jenny Matteson launched the ball into the box where Dittmer leaped to get a head on it for the goal. Matteson earned the assist on the score for her first collegiate point.
The two teams fought hard for the remainder of the second half but concluded regulation in a 1-1 tie.
In the first overtime session, the Catamounts shot a pair of shots but could not get the goal. In the second overtime period, UNCG had two good looks on goal, including an attempt from Attayek, but neither team was successful in producing the game-winner. The Spartans held a 12-10 shot advantage as well as a 5-3 lead in corner kicks for the match. Matteson led Western with three shots, with her classmate Shanna Schmoker recording two as seven Catamounts tallied shots in the match.
In goal, Katherine Ryan recorded three saves for UNCG and Row had four for Western Carolina.
Western continues its road swing through conference play this Thursday, Oct. 5, visiting arch-rival, Appalachian State, in Boone at 7:00 pm. The Catamounts defeated the Mountaineers on a last-second goal in overtime last season in Cullowhee. The surprising Mountaineers just had their five-match winning streak snapped on Sunday, falling 1-0 to the College of Charleston on the road.
