Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina women's tennis team fell to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the on-campus Catamount Athletic Complex.
In doubles, the Bucs duo of Polish senior Sylwia Ziolkowska and junior Masha Ilina from the Ukraine defeated Western's sophomore tandem of Trish Hanson and Spanish-born Mariona Trilla Jane, 8-2, in the number one position.The second-seeded pair of Susanna Sjokvist from Sweden and Holly Stocks for WCU dropped the only other contested doubles match in straight sets, 8-0, to Elena Volobueva (Spain) and Sandie Knight (Australia).
East Tennessee State swept the five contested singles matches, with the Bucs winning at number six by default. Hanson dropped the number one match by identical scores of 6-1 to ETSU's Olya Batsula. Sjokvist fought hard, losing the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-2, before dropping the second 6-1 to Volobueva. Trilla Jane fell 6-2, 6-1 at number three to Knight, with Stocks and freshman Carley Abbott combining to win one game at four and five, but dropping three of the four sets, 6-0.
Western Carolina will next host the Wofford Terriers at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, March 29 at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Southern Conference action.
