Western Carolina dropped all nine matches against Elon, falling on the road, 7-0, in Southern Conference women's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Catamounts fell in doubles competition as sophomores Trish Hanson and Mariona Trilla Jane fell at No. 1 to the Phoenix duo of Elizabeth Kernodle and Whitney Butcher, 8-4. At No. 2, Elon's Kelly Fleck and Melissa Holland defeated WCU freshman Holly Stocks and sophomore Susanna Sjokvist, 8-0. Western defaulted at the third flight of doubles, giving Elon the point.
In singles action, Fleck staved off Hanson 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at No. 1, Kernodle turned back Sjokvist 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Holland foiled Jane 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 at No. 3, Butcher beat Stocks 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, and Elon's Benton bested Carley Abbott 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and Nicholson. The Phoenix won number six by default to complete the sweep.
The Catamounts (3-16, 0-8) will conclude the 2005-06 regular season by hosting Chattanooga for its SoCon regular-season finale at 2:30 pm Wednesday, April 12.
