Brevard, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team opened its spring season with a 6-1 win over the Brevard College Tornados Saturday afternoon. The Catamounts (1-0) earned five singles victories and took the doubles point with wins in the first and third seeds.
Juniors Susanna Sjokvist and Trish Hanson earned Western singles points with wins at the second and third seeds, respectively, with both freshmen Tessie Salame and Amanda Massey garnering their first collegiate head-to-head match victories. Salame defeated Brevard's Kimberly Dixon (6-1, 6-0) at number four with Massey, a native of Weaverville, N.C., downing Kimberlee Cooper (6-0, 6-1) in the fifth position.
Sophomore Holly Stocks rounded out WCU's singles victories as the sixth seed, downing Emily Barrick in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) while the Catamounts' first seed, junior Mariona Trilla Jane, fought hard before falling 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles action, Hanson and Salame teamed to defeat Brevard's Jenny Lewellen and Dixon, 8-1, in the first flight, while Stocks and Massey combined to sweep Cooper/Slagle, 8-0.
Western returns to the court for the first of three home matches this Friday, Feb. 16, to host Presbyterian at the Catamount Athletic Complex at 2:00 pm. On Saturday, WCU entertains Coastal Carolina at 1:30 pm (in the event of adverse weather, the match will be moved to the Grove Park Inn facilities in Asheville at 4:00 pm) with the Catamounts hosting Gardner-Webb at 1:00 pm on Sunday afternoon in Cullowhee.
