CHARLESTON, S.C. - Western Carolina women's tennis fell 4-0 to No. 7 seeded Wofford Thursday in the first round of the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championships at Farmfield Tennis Center. The Catamounts, who were the No. 10 seed in the tournament, end their season with a record of 5-14.
At the first day of the tournament all-conference and specialty awards were announced by the Southern Conference office and junior Catamount Susanna Sjokvist was honored for her sportsmanship. Sjokvist and Furman's Jacqueline Eckert shared the Southern Conference Sportsmanship Award.
In the match, Western Carolina lost the doubles point, falling at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Catamounts' Trish Hanson and Tessie Salame were leading 7-4 at No. 1 doubles over Wofford's Merry Ellen Henry and McKenzie Carson when play was halted.
Western Carolina had split sets at No. 2 and No. 4 singles but losses at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles sealed the match for Wofford.
