Boone, N.C. -
The Western Carolina women's tennis team captured the doubles point on Monday afternoon, but could not capitalize on the momentum in singles play, falling on the road at Appalachian State, 5-2, in Southern Conference action. Monday's match had been rescheduled from Sunday.
Western took an early lead in the match after taking two of the three doubles bouts. Freshman Tessie Salame teamed with junior Trish Hanson to down the Mountaineer tandem of Anja Gugger and Amanda Cash, 8-6. The Catamounts took the point when junior Mariona Trilla Jane and freshman Amanda Massey defeated ASU's Monica Tomas and Caroline Mauch, 8-4.
Leading 1-0, Salame was the lone Catamount to win in singles competition, defeating Gugger at number one in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. The win was her first in the number one spot for WCU this season. Hanson, playing out of the top spot for just the second time this year, commanded an early lead over her opponent, Monica Tomas, at number two before falling in back-to-back tiebreakers.
Trilla Jane was the only other WCU player to win a set, taking the second set, 7-5, over ASU's Mauch before falling.
Western returns to action on Tuesday, visiting perennial SoCon power, Furman, in Greenville, S.C.
