Greensboro, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team were unable to overcome two first-half goals by UNC Greensboro, as the Catamounts fell 2-0 on Friday night. The Catamounts drop to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in the Southern Conference after the loss while UNCG improves to 9-4-1 and 4-0-1 in the SoCon after the victory.
The UNCG Spartans struck first when eight minutes into the contest midfielder Katelynn Donovan beat the Catamounts goal keeper Caitlin Williams to put the Spartans up 1-0. Donovan took a pass from teammate Nicole Danford and scored at the lower right corner of the goal for her sixth goal of the season.
Ten minutes later UNCG found the net again when Donovan beat Catamounts goalie Williams to make the score 2-0 Spartans. Donovan from the right corner of the box fired to the lower left of the net and scored for her seventh goal of the season.
Western Carolina had some opportunities in the first half when at the 28:00 minute mark junior Bri Cunningham had a shot on goal but Spartans goalie Kelsey Kearney came up with the save to deny Cunningham. Two minutes later Cunningham was attacking again when she fired another shot on goal but Spartans keeper Kearney again came up with the save to preserve the 2-0 lead.
In the second half the Catamounts had two more opportunities to cut into the lead late when at the 75:00 minute mark junior Shanna Schmoker had a chance but her shot went wide of the goal. Twelve minutes later freshman Kayla Beauduy had her shot attempt go just wide of the net.
Catamounts goal keeper Williams finished the contest with five saves to keep the game close.
Western Carolina will head back home to face SoCon opponent the Elon Phoenix on Sunday starting at 2 p.m.
