Catamounts Improve To 6-1 In SoCon Play With Victory Over Georgia Southern, 2-1.

Statesboro, Ga. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team used a goal in each half to defeat Georgia Southern, as the Catamounts won 2-1 on Friday night. The Catamounts improve to 9-6 overall and 6-1 in the Southern Conference after the victory while Georgia Southern drops to 4-7-3 and 2-4-1 in the SoCon after the loss.

The victory for Western Carolina gives them their seventh win in their last eight games, and now the Catamounts are three conference wins away from their highest Southern Conference win total ever.

Western Carolina came out attacking early when 22:00 minutes into the match freshman Kayla Beauduy beat the Eagles goalie Lauren Santos making the score 1-0 Western Carolina. Beauduy took a pass from teammate Bri Cunningham and fired it into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

The Catamounts ended the first half with a 6-to-1 advantage in shots with Western Carolina's defense not letting Georgia Southern get any attempts on goal in the first half of play.

Western Carolina added to their lead early in the second half when at the 19:00 minute mark junior Shanna Schmoker took a pass from teammate Cunningham putting it past the Eagles keeper Lauren Santos making the score 2-0 Catamounts. Schmoker now leads the team in goals with four on the season.

The Georgia Southern Eagles got on the board six minutes later when Ashley Toussaint took a pass from teammate Michelle Berard and beat Catamounts goalie Caitlin Williams to make the score 2-1 Catamounts.

Western Carolina finished the game with a 13-to-5 advantage with shots with eight being on goal.

The Catamounts hope to continue their solid play in the Southern Conference when they travel to Davidson, N.C. on Sunday starting at 2 p.m.
