Western Carolina vs. Chattanooga - Post-Game Notes

Nov. 1, 2008

Recap |  Box Score |

Game Captains: Western Carolina again sent its upperclassmen out as the game captains ... senior linemen Jeff Bradley and James Singletary were the two a mid-field for the opening coin toss, which Chattanooga won and chose to receive the opening kickoff.

Notes:

* Western Carolina snapped its 20-game Southern Conference losing skid by defeating Chattanooga at home on Saturday, 27-7 ... the victory also snapped a five-game slide on the season, while also halting a two-game losing drought against Chattanooga ... the win gives the Catamounts a 9-8 advantage over the Mocs in Cullowhee.

* For the third-consecutive week, Western Carolina scored first in the game ... But unlike the previous two contests, the Catamounts took the early lead and converted it into a win.

* Freshman running back Levon Curtis got his first career start as a Catamount against Chattanooga, posting a career-best 104 yards rushing on 18 carries including a career-long, 53-yard run in the second quarter ... It was the third time this season a WCU back had eclipsed the 100-yard barrier, with the other two coming on the legs of red-shirt freshman Quan Warley;

* Western Carolina had its shortest scoring drive of the season in the first quarter ... After a failed punt attempt by Chattanooga deep in its own end zone, Western Carolina recovered the ball on the Mocs' four yard line. A four-yard TD pass from Zack Jaynes to Adam Hearns in just six seconds gave the Catamounts a 7-0 advantage with 6:47 left in the quarter.

* Playing in place of the injured red-shirt sophomore WR Marquel Pittman, true-freshman wide receiver Andrerius Thomas had his first multi-touchdown performance of his career ... Thomas caught touchdown passes of 21 and 17 yards from red-shirt freshman QB Zack Jaynes in the win ... Thomas ended the game with 44 receiving yards.

* Jaynes connected on a career-high three touchdown passes against UTC ... he had two touchdown passes in a game twice before ... Jaynes ended the contest 14 of 25 for 146 yards and a long of 21 yards passing.

* Junior safety Chris Collins forced his fifth fumble of the year against Chattanooga, which leads the Southern Conference.

* Senior quarterback Andy Horn saw action for the first time in two weeks when he got into the game in the fourth quarter against Chattanooga.
