CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's tennis (3-8) had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to instate rival UNC Asheville (4-5) Thursday at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The match was part of the Parkway series with UNC Asheville gaining its second point of the series, however, Western Carolina still leads 5-2.
The Catamounts opened the match with an early 1-0 lead when the team took the double's point. Trish Hanson and Tessie Salame won their fourth straight match at No. 1 doubles with a 9-7 victory over Louise Bottomley and Leslie Smith. Western Carolina clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 2 doubles as Amanda Massey and Mariona Jane won 8-4.
Western Carolina got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles but UNC Asheville picked up victories at singles three through six to secure the 4-3 win. Salame got a big win at No. 1 singles defeating Smith 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. It was Salame's fourth straight victory at No. 1 singles. Salame currently leads the team with a record of 7-3 on the season.
The Catamounts will head back into Southern Conference play when Western Carolina travels to Davidson on March 16. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
