Charleston, S.C - Western Carolina women's soccer, behind nine saves from goalkeeper Caitlin Williams, defeated the College of Charleston, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Western Carolina improves to 5-5 overall, 2-0 in SoCon play, while the College of Charleston drops to 8-2-1 overall and 1-1 in SoCon play.
At the 66:00 minute mark in the match, the Catamounts were attacking when freshman Kayla Beauduy got a pass from teammate Nikki Collins and Beauduy beat the Cougars goal keeper Erin Smith for her second goal of the season to give Western Carolina the 1-0 advantage. The goal by Beauduy ended up being the game-winner thanks to great defense from the Catamounts.
Sophomore goalkeeper for the Catamounts, Caitlin Williams finished the game with nine saves and recorded her third shutout in a row.
The first half saw both teams with their opportunities to take the lead in the contest. Forty seconds into the match the College of Charleston's Chrissy Caruso had a shot on goal but Williams made the save for Western Carolina. Three minutes later, the Cougar's Hope Atkinson had another shot on goal but again Williams made the save for the Catamounts to keep zeros on the board. Williams finished the half with five saves keeping the game even at halftime 0-0.
The Catamounts had an opportunity, in the second half, at the 56:00 minute mark when Shanna Schmoker had a shot on goal but the Cougars goal keeper Smith made the save.
The College of Charleston had a chance late in the contest when at the 77:00 minute mark, the Cougar's Megan Manthey took a shot on goal but Williams came up with the save. The Catamounts were out shot 14-to-5 by the College of Charleston Cougars but Western Carolina found a way to win the match.
Western Carolina begins homecoming week with the Catamounts hosting the Wofford Terriers on Friday Oct. 3 starting at 6 p.m.
