CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Western Carolina women's tennis fell to Chattanooga in Southern Conference women's tennis action 5-2 at the UTC Tennis Complex Friday.
With dangerous weather approaching the Chattanooga area, the match began with singles play. UTC freshman Charlotte Bossy won her fifth match at the No. 4 spot defeating Layne Arnold 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Emily Hangstefer won her second straight match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ainhoa Iglesias at No. 3.
The Catamounts got to within one with a win at the top spot. Izabella Glinska defeated the Lady Mocs' freshman Shaina Singh 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Annie Green posted a 7-6(7), 6-0 win over the Catamounts' Chelsea Best at the No. 5 spot and Brianna Wishing clinched the win for Chattanooga at the No. 6 position. Western Carolina's Emily Turke won the first set 6-3, but Wishing, a freshman from Murfreesboro, Tenn., won the next two sets 6-3, 6-1 to claim the victory.
Doubles play started outdoors with Singh and Bossy claiming an 8-0 win at the No. 3 position over Best and Jennifer Brazelton. The next two matches were relocated to the UTC indoor courts as the weather began to turn.
Green and van der Veek would grab an 8-3 victory at the top spot over Glinska and Arnold for their second straight win. Chattanooga would complete the sweep with a win at the No. 2 position. Hangstefer and Kate Ksiezopolski defeated Massey and Iglesias 8-5.
