ATHENS, Ga. - Western Carolina fell to No. 8 Georgia 8-0 in five innings Wednesday at UGA Softball Stadium. The Catamounts drop to 11-28 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 34-8.
Freshman shortstop Chelsea Schaffer had her school record 15-game hitting streak snapped in the game. She went 0-2 in the contest but still carries a .318 batting average, the best in the conference amongst freshmen.
Lefty freshman hurler Katie King got the starting nod and went two scoreless innings before giving up seven runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Bulldogs tacked on a single run in the bottom of the fourth to shorten the game to five innings.
King went 2.2 innings before being replaced by Chere Monday who worked 1.1 innings. King takes the loss and drops to 5-13 on the season, giving up seven runs on eight hits. Monday allowed one run on three hits and struck out two.
The Catamounts had two hits in the contest. Kristen Gay picked up a hit and so did freshman Brittany Barrineau.
Western Carolina plays its final Southern Conference series of the year this weekend traveling to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and the single game is also at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
