GREENVILLE, S.C. - Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of games to Furman, 2-1, 5-0, Saturday at Pepsi Stadium. The Catamounts fall to 11-30 and 7-12 in the Southern Conference while Furman improves to 19-25 and 9-10 in the SoCon.
The first game of the doubleheader was a tight contest settled in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the score tied at one, Furman's Morgan Hughey hit a single with two outs and Stephanie Field scored on a Western Carolina error to win the game 2-1.
Furman got on the board first in bottom of the fourth inning, after three scoreless innings. Starting Western Carolina pitcher Katie King gave up a lead-off walk to the Paladins Lana Mackey who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then to third thanks to a single by Jesseie Homesly. Mackey scored on a ground out by Katie Michael.
Western Carolina answered in the top of the fifth with a run of its own. King got the first hit of her Catamount career with one out and scored off an RBI single by Kristen Gay.
King tossed the complete game and took the loss allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out one. Gay had a pair of hits for the Catamounts.
In the second game, Furman got all five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Starting Catamount pitcher Chere Monday gave up five runs on four hits in 0.2 innings of work before being replaced King.
King went 5.1 innings allowing just two hits and striking out four. However, the Catamount offense couldn't get any runners across the plate, stranding four runners on base. Western Carolina had just three hits in the game, one each from Gay, Chelsea Schaffer and Brittany Barrineau.
The Catamounts will close out their series with Furman at 1 p.m. Sunday
