CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - No. 8 seed Western Carolina softball (12-35) closes out its season with a 6-1 loss to No. 4 seed Georgia Southern (26-24), in the elimination game of the Southern Conference Tournament Thursday. It was the third game of the day for the Catamounts, after the first day of the tournament was cancelled due to inclement weather on Wednesday.
Freshman pitcher Katie King was called into action, in the circle, for the second game of the day against the Eagles. She ends her season with a 6-17 record after giving up four earned runs on 10 hits and striking out three.
Georgia Southern scored a run in the first and second innings and added a pair of runs in the top of the third. King held the Eagles scoreless for four innings before giving up a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.
Western Carolina got on the scoreboard for a lone run in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Danielle Reese picked up a single and moved to third off a Georgia Southern error which also put Katie King on second base. Freshman Chelsea Schaffer hit into a fielder's choice and Reese was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning. Kristen Gay hit an RBI single to score King for the Catamounts only run of the game.
The game was the final contest for seniors Lauren Ross, Stephanie Beatty, Mollie Fowler and Beth Hauser.
