SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer (3-6-2, 0-2-1 SoCon) battled to a 0-0 two overtime tie at Wofford (5-3-2, 0-1-2) Friday night at Snyder Field.
It is the second time this season the Catamounts have gone to double overtime in a match. The last time WCU went to two OT was a 1-1 stalemate with Francis Marion September 17. It is the first overtime match in Southern Conference play for Western Carolina and the second for Wofford.
Late in the first half, both Western Carolina and Wofford had chances to break the scoring drought. At the 85:56 mark, freshman Alex Gastesi took a shot that went high and over the goal. Wofford came back with its own shot in the final four minutes when Terrier Maggie McLaughlin took her own shot that also went wide.
Both clubs continued to battle for that elusive goal in the first overtime. Wofford opened the first OT with three shots in the first three minutes. Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Williams turned away two of the Terrier shots with a pair of saves and Wofford's Erin Stephenson's shot was blocked.
Western Carolina closed out the first overtime with a pair of shots in the final two minutes. Catamount Katie Salmons' shot was high and Laura Greb took her fourth shot of the match that was saved by Wofford goalkeeper Kimberly Cohn.
In the second overtime, only Wofford got a look at the goal with Sydney Reed taking a shot that was blocked by Western Carolina.
Overall, Wofford had 15 shots in the match and Western Carolina countered with 10. Senior keeper Williams stood tall in the net with six saves in the contest.
Western Carolina returns to action at 2 p.m. Sunday at Furman.
