BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Western Carolina women's soccer (5-8-3, 2-4-2 SoCon) dropped a tightly contested Southern Conference match to Samford (10-5-1, 6-2 SoCon) 1-0 Sunday at Bulldog Field.
For 80 minutes both squads battled without a score. Samford collected the only goal of the match with 10 minutes left. The Bulldogs' Michelle Moll scored her first goal of the season when she took a pass from Sarah Wilkinson and beat the defender, to the left, and placed a shot into the corner from seven yards out.
Prior to the Samford score, Western Carolina sophomore forward Laura Greb took her third shot of the game at the 72 minute mark. It sailed high over the net. After the Bulldogs scored, the Catamounts' Katie Sedgley had a solid look at the net but it was wide right.
Prior to giving up the goal, late in the second half, senior goal keeper Caitlin Williams had eight saves in the match. Samford bombarded Williams with 18 shots in the contest. Western Carolina had eight total shots.
The Catamounts complete its three-match road swing at UNC Greensboro at 6 p.m. Thursday.
