GREENSBOORO, N.C. - Western Carolina women's soccer (5-9-3, 2-5-2 SoCon) dropped a mid-week Southern Conference match, 2-0, to No.21 ranked UNC Greensboro (14-1-1, 9-0 SoCon) Thursday at UNC Greensboro Stadium.
The two goals scored by UNCG was the lowest scoring output by the Spartans in two matches, since a 2-1 win over College of Charleston. In the last seven matches, UNC Greensboro has scored two goals or less three times, including the match Thursday with the Catamounts.
UNC Greensboro was held scoreless in the second half after scoring both its goals, in the first half. The Spartans scored their first goal at the 17:51 minute mark when Cat Barnekow dribbled up field and into the box for an unassisted goal, her fourth of the season. With less then 50 seconds left in the first half, Spartan Tabitha Padgett notched her 10th goal of the season with a header into the goal off an assist by Stine Schoening.
Overall, UNCG had 18 shots in the match. Senior Catamount goalkeeper Caitlin Williams fended off the shots and also picked up six saves.
Western Carolina's lone shot was attempted by freshman Christine Kaznowski. Just 39 seconds into the second half, Kaznowski took a shot and Spartan goalie Kelsey Kearney had the save.
The Catamounts play their final home match of the season Sunday against Elon, honoring seniors Williams, Kellie Oberholtzer, Liz Eichler and Erin Hamilton. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
