BOONE, N.C. Western Carolina women's soccer (5-10, 4, 2-6-3 SoCon) and its rival Appalachian State (5-8-5, 2-5-4 SoCon) played to a 0-0 two overtime tie Wednesday in both teams Southern Conference regular season finale.
The tie knocks the Catamounts out of a berth in the eight-team Southern Conference Championship which begins October 31.
After a scoreless regulation, Catamount Head Soccer Coach Chad Miller was ready to throw caution to the wind heading into overtime. Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Williams had begged to try her feet at the forward position, but was told she was too valuable in goal, and no one wanted a risk of her getting hurt. Williams played the forward position in high school and longed to play the position just one more time.
Williams got her wish in the 20 minutes of overtime against the Mountaineers. She took off her goalie jersey and donned number 25 and went on the field in front of the goal instead of in goal.
This also afforded freshman goalkeeper Sabrina Temple to see her first action in goal all season. In her 20 minutes of overtime play, Temple had four saves.
In the second overtime, Williams took the second to last shot of the season for the Catamounts. At the 104:51 minute mark, Williams took her best shot and it was saved by the Mountaineers goalie Caroline Clarke.
Freshman forward Christine Kaznowski led the Catamounts with four shots. Overall, WCU had 12 shots in the match and Appalachian State ended the contest with 19. Of those 19 shots by Appalachian State, Western Carolina goalkeepers of Temple and Williams combined for 11 saves. Williams had seven of the saves in regulation.
