Men Finish Seventh at SoCon Championship; Women Ninth

BOONE, N.C. – The Western Carolina cross country teams completed the 2010 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships with the men placing seventh and the women finishing in ninth.

Appalachian State won the men’s title for the sixth straight year as five runners finished in the top 15. Chattanooga’s Emmanuel Kirwa won the individual title for the third consecutive time, completing the 8K race in a time of 24:29.40.

On the men’s side, junior Josey Weaver led the Catamounts with a seventh-place finish in a time of 24:59.21, earning All-SoCon First-Team honors for his performance. Sophomore Nolan Clark was the second WCU runner to cross the finish line, placing 33rd in a time of 26:08.07.

Sophomores Chase Fisher and Tyler Dunn took 45th and 46th, completing the race in times of 26:38.67 and 26:42.09. The next two Catamount runners to finish were senior Drew Tucker (56th, 27:03.41) and sophomore Jake Swimmer (61st, 27:16.53). Sophomore Garrett West (72nd, 28:04.97) and senior Stephon Roach (86th, 29:58.63) were the final two WCU runners to cross the finish line.

Samford captured the women’s title for the second consecutive season with three runners placing in the top 10. UNC Greensboro’s Ashley Schnell claimed the individual title with a time of 17:39.98, nearly six seconds ahead of Samford’s Lauren D’Alessio who took second.


On the women’s side, sophomore Morgan Turner was named to the All-SoCon Second Team after leading the Catamounts with a 10th-place finish in a time of 18:27.67. Classmate Mara Smith was the next WCU runner to cross the finish line in a time of 19:10.31 to place 31st.

Junior Olivia Jacobs took 48th in a time of 19:30.21 followed by senior Jordan Gaddy in 59th (19:50.14) and Deanna Butler in 65th (20:05.56). The last two runners to score points for WCU were sophomore Leslie Raymond in 68th (20:12.77) and freshman Jocelyn Keen in 71st (20:15.90).

The final two Catamount women to cross the finish line were freshman Kaylan Lance (79th, 20:43.54) and sophomore Alyse Childress (92nd, 21:50.09).
