BOONE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball (4-20, 3-12 Southern Conference) was swept in its series with Appalachian State (14-9, 10-4 SoCon) with a 73-59 loss to the Mountaineers Monday in the Holmes Center.

Senior Kristen Feemster scored a career-high 17 points in the game, scoring 12 of her 17 points in the first half. She was one of three Catamounts to score in double figures with Caitlin Hollifield adding 14 points and Kendra Carroll pouring in 13.

Down by four points at the half, 39-34, Western Carolina dug itself in a hole when it didn't score a field goal in the first six and a half minutes of the second half. Appalachian State used the Catamount's scoring woes to build a 52-37 advantage before Hollifield hit a field goal with 13:49 left.

The Mountaineers built a 15 point lead, 54-39, with 12:41 left before Western Carolina went on a 6-0 run to cut the Appalachian State lead to nine, 54-45 with 10:35 left. It was one of four times the Catamounts cut the Appalachian State lead to single digits in the final 20 minutes.

Western Carolina got to within seven points of Appalachian State twice, the last time off a pair of free throws by Hollifield with 4:03 left. The Mountaineers pulled away hitting 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the final 2:54 of the game.

Appalachian State built a nine point lead, 19-10, early in the first half before Western Carolina went on a 10-0 run. The Catamounts took the lead off a pair of free throws by Carroll at the 8:56 minute mark.

Western Carolina went up by three, 22-19 off a Hollifield bucket, before the Mountaineers ended their five minute scoring drought with a field goal by Ashlen Dewart to make it 22-21. Appalachian State outscored Western Carolina 18-13 in the final eight minutes to take the four point advantage into the locker room.

The Catamounts shot 37.1 percent from the field but couldn't keep pace with Appalachian state who shot a steaming 55.1 percent. Western Carolina was also outrebounded 31-27, and turned the ball over 22 times.

Western Carolina completes its four-game road swing at Elon on Saturday. Tip-time is set for 2 p.m.
