Charleston, S.C. - Western Carolina fell, 4-0, to The Citadel on Friday in their Southern Conference opener at Riley Park. The Catamounts (10-3, 0-1 SoCon) were shutout for the first time this season as the Bulldogs (9-3, 1-0 SoCon) picked up their third consecutive victory.
WCU collected six hits in the contest in what proved to be a pitcher's duel. Right-hander Jason Sullivan (3-1) threw his second complete game of the season by tossing eight innings. The senior fanned 10 Bulldogs, while giving up just three earned runs in the loss. Citadel starter Asher Wojciechowski (4-0) also threw a gem, holding the Cats to just six hits with 14 strikeouts.
WCU threatened in the third and fourth innings, but fell short after stranding two runners on board in each inning. The Citadel added two runs in the first inning before a pair of single runs added in the third and fourth inning helped create separation in the contest.
Cameron Dullnig had the only multi-hit game for Western Carolina as he collected a single and a double. Tyler White and Ollie Goulder each snagged a hit in the fourth and fifth spots in the lineup.
Freshman Cory Cronan singled up the middle in the third inning, but was left on base in scoring position after advancing on a Dullnig single. Senior Trevor Collias also collected a hit, as he went 1-for-3 in the game.
Drew Mahaffey closed the door for the Bulldogs in the ninth inning with two strikeouts and one walk. The Citadel's Nick Orvin hit his third home run of the season in the third inning and went 3-for-4 in Friday evening's game with two runs scored and a RBI.
The Catamounts will return to Riley Park at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Right-hander Kyle Stewart (1-0, 5.28 ERA) will be on the mound for the Catamounts. Live coverage of the game can be accessed online at CatamountSports.com.
