Catamount Baseball Drops, 7-5, Decision to The Citadel

Charleston, S.C. - Western Carolina dropped game two of a three-game series with The Citadel on Saturday as the Bulldogs defeated WCU, 7-5. The Catamounts (10-4, 0-2 SoCon) had three batters reach multi-hit games for a total of 10 hits in the contest. The Bulldogs (10-3, 2-0 SoCon) remained unblemished in Southern Conference action and won the series over WCU after four batters recorded extra-base hits.

WCU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Ollie Goulder hammered his fourth home run of the season. The Citadel answered with five unanswered runs before the Catamounts closed the gap to 5-3 in the fourth. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the home-half of the fourth inning. WCU rallied with another run in sixth to narrow the gap to 7-5.

Sophomore Kyle Stewart (1-1) tossed two and a third innings, giving up four earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk in the loss. Goulder extended his hit streak to six games with a 2-for-5 afternoon with a RBI and one run scored.

Senior Trevor Collias notched a season-high three hits that included a RBI single up the middle in the fourth inning. The senior from Marietta, Ga., hit 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Outfielder Cameron Dullnig notched a pair of hits in the lead-off spot to remain as WCU's leading hitter with a .392 batting average. Dullnig's single up the middle in the fourth drove in another WCU run to help narrow the deficit to 5-3. The San Antonio, Texas native hit 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Dylan de Graff would hit a single in the latter-half of the fourth inning to drive in another Catamount run to close The Citadel's advantage to 5-4. de Graaf hit 1-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases on Saturday.

Ross Heffley also tallied an RBI in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Collias to score.

The Citadel used a combination of four doubles and a two-run home run to create separation in the contest. Nick Orvin's two-run long bomb in the fourth inning helped create a 7-4 lead for the Bulldogs. Orvin had doubled earlier in the contest to drive in a run in the third inning. The lead-off hitter led the Bulldogs with a 2-for-3 evening with two runs scored, three RBI and a walk.

Matt Talley (2-1) garnered his second win of the season with four earned runs allowed on nine hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Drew Mahaffey earned his fifth save of the year giving up just one walk in an inning tossed.

Western Carolina will try to evade the sweep tomorrow at Riley Park at 1:00 p.m. Lefty Vance Chavis (2-1, 2.91) will start on the mound for the Catamounts. Live stats and video of Sunday's contest can be accessed online at CatamountSports.com.
