WCU Women's Tennis Falls to Charlotte, 6-1

Charlotte, N.C. - Freshman Karen Jiménez Sarmiento won her singles' point in straight-sets, but the Western Carolina women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Charlotte on Friday afternoon. The Catamounts fell to 1-8 on the season, while the 49ers improved to 4-10 overall.

Jiménez Sarmientowon her team-high third match of the season over Charlotte's Gabi Vergara, 6-2, 6-4. The victory was the first this season for the freshman in the four spot. Senior Amanda Massey fell in a tiebreaker after falling in set one 2-6, but battling back to win set two 6-1. Massey would then lose the tie break 11-9.

Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz dropped her match to Charlotte's Kimber Redfern, 2-6, 4-6. Emily Turke was defeated by Candace Cunningham, 5-7, 0-6. Katie Barry (1-6, 2-6) and Izabella Glinska (0-6, 1-6) also lost in straight-sets to the 49ers.

Charlotte claimed the doubles point with an 8-3 win by Redfern and Andrea Rivera over WCU's Jiménez Sarmiento/Turke. Massey/Iglesias Díaz dropped their doubles match in the one spot to Ana Spivakovsky and Alexandra Zinn, 2-8. The Catamounts' Glinska and Layne Arnold fell, 1-8, to Vergara and Anna Ekelund in the doubles' two-spot.

WCU returns to the Catamount Athletic Complex for a six-match homestand. The Cats will begin action on March 26 against non-conference foe Presbyterian at 2:00 p.m.
