CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (4-19) split a doubleheader with Brevard College (12-13), dropping the first game 2-1 and winning the nightcap 7-3.

Sophomore shortstop Chelsea Schaffer hit two homeruns in the pair of games. It was her fourth and fifth long balls of the season. All five of her homeruns have come in the month of March.

For the third time in four games, sophomore lefty hurler Katie King was on the losing end of a one-run game. King got the decision on two one-run losses at Georgia Southern on March 20, and dropped the first game against Brevard, 2-1. King allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out one.

Brevard's first one run, in the opening game, was off a wild pitch by King. Maddie Fletcher reached first after King hit her and sent her to first, and she moved to second and third off Tornado player's ground outs. With two outs, King sailed a pitch over catcher Danielle Reese's head to allow Fletcher to score.

In the third inning, Brevard scored what would become the winning run when Becca Curlee reached on a Catamount error. An RBI single by Kristina Clayton scored Curlee.

Schaffer hit her first homerun of the doubleheader in the bottom of the third inning, to pull Western Carolina within one run, 2-1. With two outs, Schaffer towered a shot over the center field wall.

Western Carolina had just three hits in the game, with Colby Liles and Kristen Gay also picking up hits.

In the second game, Western Carolina got on the board first. Back-to-back singles by Amber Hawkins and Haley Pace, in the second inning, put runners at first and second. Bekkah Burkett hit an RBI single that scored Hawkins.

Brevard took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Clayton hit a sacrifice fly RBI to right field and Chelsi Mallory knocked an RBI double.

The Catamounts took the lead for good with one swing, in the bottom half of the third inning, as Hawkins hit a three RBI homerun over the right field wall. It was her second homerun of the season and second in three games. Western Carolina tacked on a single run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI single by Megan Gardner.

Western Carolina had two homeruns in the fifth inning. Schaffer hit a one out homerun over the right field wall. With two outs, Pace hit her second homerun of the season to left field.

Brevard added a run in the top of the seventh. The second RBI double by Mallory plated the Tornados' third and final run of the game.

Freshman pitcher Amber Steindhardt went seven innings and improves to 3-4 on the season. She allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out two. Schaffer, Hawkins and Pace each had two hits in the game.

Western Carolina will host Furman, at the Catamount Softball Complex, in a Southern Conference series Saturday and Sunday. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and the single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
