Western Carolina Women's Tennis Defeats Presbyterian, 4-3

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Women's Tennis team used four victories in singles to defeat Presbyterian College, 4-3, at the Catamount Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon. The win gave the Catamounts (2-8) their second of the year, while the Blue Hose fell to 3-11 overall.

WCU's top three singles players collected victories, while Karen Jiménez Sarmientonotched a win in the fifth spot. PC collected the doubles point, but WCU rallied to win the match in singles action.

Senior Amanda Massey picked up a straight-set victory, 6-4,6-4, over Heather Heusel to secure the first point for WCU. Jiménez Sarmiento won her team-leading fourth singles match of the year by knocking out Cara Caruso, 6-1,6-2.

Presbyterian won the next two singles matches to take a brief 3-2 lead as Paige Oelke defeated Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz (6-3, 6-3) and Daryl Thompson defeated Emily Turke (6-2, 2-6, 6-2).

Junior Izabella Glinska won her match in three sets over PC's Olivia McMillan, winning the first 6-0, before falling in set two 7-6. Glinska dominated the third set, 6-2. WCU won the decisive point in the three spot as true freshman Carolina Lainez defeated Presbyterian's Megan Davis, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Western Carolina failed to claim the doubles point as Heusel/Oelke defeated Massey/Iglesias Díaz, 8-3. The Cats claimed the two-spot doubles match as Jiménez Sarmiento/Lainez won, 8-4, over McMillan/Waldron. Arnold/Glinska fell to PC's Davis/Thompson, 8-5.

The Catamounts resume their six-match homestand on Saturday with Southern Conference rival UNC Greensboro. The match will start at 1:00 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
