Cullowhee, N.C. - Sophomore Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz captured a win, but the Western Carolina women's tennis team dropped a, 6-1, decision to Southern Conference foe UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The Spartans improved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon, while the Catamounts dropped to 2-9 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
Iglesias Díaz snagged her third singles match victory of the year and her first in conference by disposing of UNCG's Mikayla Rogers, 6-4, 5-7, 11-9.
The Spartans earned the one awarded doubles point as the Spartans' Rogers/Alex Whitehead defeated Layne Arnold/Izabella Glinska, 8-1. UNCG then took the other two doubles matches as Jessica Eblen/Annette Rios won, 8-3, over Carolina Lainez/Karen Jiménez Sarmiento. In the top flight of doubles, Valerie Behr and Stephanie Macfarlane defeated Iglesias Díaz/Amanda Massey, 8-7, after winning the tie-break, 7-5.
In the one singles spot, Whitehead clinched a straight set, 3-6, 3-6, victory over Glinska. Massey, a senior on the Catamount squad, dropped her decision in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 3-6. Lainez also went to three-set action as she dropped the first set 6-1 before winning set two 7-6 with a 9-7 tie break over Behr. Lainez was unable to bounce back in the final set, falling 10-5.
Emily Turke (defeated by Eblen, 0-6, 2-6) and Jiménez Sarmiento (defeated by Rios, 6-7, 6-1, 4-6) both dropped their matches on Saturday afternoon as well.
