WOODSTOCK, Ga. - Western Carolina softball dropped a pair of games, Friday, in the opening day of the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech at the Twin Creeks Complex. The Catamounts (3-7) fell to Tennessee Tech 11-0 and Rhode Island 5-2.
Tennessee Tech scored five runs in the first, one in the third and five more in the fifth to force a shortened five inning game. Sophomore pitcher Katie King went the who game and took the loss, falling to 0-4 on the season.
Western Carolina picked up four hits in the game against the Golden Eagles. Chelsea Schaffer, Kristen Gay and Robyn Burnette each got singles in the game and Danielle Reese picked up a double.
In the second game of the day, Western Carolina took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Freshman Shemekia Scotten got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After back-to-back steals, Scotten scored on a sacrifice fly by Amber Steinhardt.
After tossing three scoreless innings, freshman hurler Steinhardt gave up four runs on four hits, in the bottom of the fourth inning, to Rhode Island to give them a 4-1 lead. The Catamounts picked up one run in the top of the sixth inning, thanks to Steinhardt. With two outs, Scotten drew a walk and scored off an RBI double by Steinhardt.
Leading 5-2, Rhode Island picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning off an RBI double by Leah DiBussolo. The Catamounts' Jordan Fulton and Steinhardt each had a pair of hits in the game.
In day two of action at the Buzz Classic, on Saturday, the Catamounts will face Dartmouth at 1 p.m. and Kentucky at 6 p.m.
