Cullowhee, N.C. - Freshman Carolina Lainez snagged her third consecutive singles victory, but it wasn't enough, as Furman downed Western Carolina, 6-1, at the Catamount Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The victory gave the Paladins (14-7, 7-2 SoCon) their third consecutive victory, while WCU (3-13, 1-8 SoCon) dropped its second consecutive match in conference play.

Lainez, a native from Zaragoza, Spain, won her third singles match in a row with a straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-0, over Furman's Michele Stanford in the three spot. The freshman is now second on the team with five wins, trailing freshman Karen Jiménez Sarmiento, who has seven victories on the season.

Furman won the doubles point as Olivia Maurice / Stanford defeated Izabella Glinska / Emily Turke, 8-2. The Cats dropped the number one doubles spot as Monica Arguello / Lauren Kline held off Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz / Lainez in a tight 8-5 contest.

The Catamounts did manage a doubles victory with the combination of Jiménez Sarmiento and Amanda Massey. The duo knocked out Furman's Jennifer Betts / Brooke Mosteller, 8-5.

The Paladins swept the rest of the singles action as Arguello defeated Glinska, 6-1, 6-1. Massey dropped a 3-6, 3-6, decision to Kline in the two spot. Iglesias Díaz, a sophomore on the squad, fell 3-6, 4-6 to Furman's Susan Bitetti.
