Western Carolina Softball Drops Final Game at UNCG 17-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (7-35, 2-15 SoCon) dropped the final game of the three game Southern Conference series against UNC Greensboro (19-22, 8-6 SoCon), 17-1, Sunday at the UNC Greensboro Softball Field.

Senior catcher Danielle Reese had a bright spot moment for Western Carolina as her stolen base in the second inning broke the school record for stolen bases in a career. Reese now has 18 in her career, overtaking former Catamount teammate Stephanie Beatty.

The Spartans scored in four of the five innings against the Catamounts. UNCG had 14 hits in the contest and Kaitlin Merkt and Whitney Sirois each had homeruns. Western Carolina committed three in the game.

Western Carolina put together five hits in the contest, including a pair from starting pitcher Amber Steinhardt, who had a single and a double. Steinhardt takes the loss on the mound giving up 10 runs, only three earned, on seven hits and falls to 4-12 on the season. Catamount pitchers Katie King and Bekkah Burkette also saw action in the game.

The Catamounts avoided a shutout by scoring a run in the top of the fifth inning. Starting Spartan pitcher Amber Harrell lost the chance at a shutout when she gave up a hit to freshman Jordan Fulton with one out in the fifth. With two outs, fellow freshman Colby Liles hit a shot to left field to score Fulton and break-up the shutout.

Western Carolina returns home for a pair of mid-week games. The Catamounts host Mars Hill on Tuesday and Winston-Salem State on Thursday. Both are doubleheaders and set for 4 p.m.
