Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team battled, but fell short, 5-2, to Chattanooga on Friday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex. Sophomore Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz picked up her second consecutive win in singles action, while freshman Karen Jiménez Sarmiento earned her fifth singles victory of the season.
The Catamounts (2-10, 0-6 SoCon) dropped their second consecutive match, as the Lady Mocs improved to 7-10 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
Iglesias Díaz defeated UTC's Beata Knizat, 6-0, 6-4 to pick up her second win in a row. Jimenez Sarmiento won her team-high fifth match of the season by defeating the Lady Mocs', 6-2, 6-1.
Chattanooga's Beata Knizat and Annie Green combined to defeat Izabella Glinska/Emily Turke, 8-3, to claim the doubles point. Jiménez Sarmiento/Carolina Lainez fell, 4-8, in the two doubles spot to Hangstefer/Bossy. In the first doubles spot, Iglesias Diaz and Amanda Massey fell to UTC's Jenna Nurik / Shaina Singh, 8-3.
WCU dropped the top three singles matches as Glinska fell to Nurik (3-6, 1-6). In the two spot, Massey dropped a three-set decision to Shaina Singh (0-6, 7-6, 9-11). Lainez fell to Hangstefer (7-6, 6-0).
Turke dropped her singles match in two sets to Jennifer Taylor, 4-6, 3-6.
The Catamounts will conclude their four-match homestand on Saturday against SoCon foe Wofford. The match is scheduled for Noon first-serve.
