CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (10-40, 2-18 SoCon) dropped the final game of its three-game series with Samford (17-30, 8-13), 9-1, Sunday at the Catamount Softball Complex.
Samford pitcher Amanda Bars (4-14) tossed five scoreless innings before Western Carolina avoided the shutout with a fun in the bottom of the sixth inning. Catamount senior Danielle Reese hit a lead-off single up the middle and moved to second on a passed ball. Freshman Robyn Burnette drew a walk to place runners on first and second. With two outs, freshman third baseman Haley Pace hit a hot shot to center field to score Reese.
Three Catamount pitchers saw action in the contest against the Bulldogs. Amber Steinhardt drew the start and went two innings before being replaced by Katie King in the third inning. Steinhardt takes the loss allowing four runs on seven hits and struck out one, falling to 7-15 on the season. King went three innings allowing three runs on four hits and struck out two. Junior Chere Monday closed out the game tossing one inning allowing two runs on two hits and walking one.
Samford scored one run in the first, two in the second, one in the third and exploded for five runs in the sixth inning. Catamount pitchers gave up 13 hits to the Bulldogs.
Western Carolina had five hits in the game. Jordan Fulton, Pace, Colby Liles, Kristen Gay and Reese each had hits in the game.
The Catamounts close out their season on May 8-9 in Boone, N.C. to face Appalachian State. The single game is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday with the doubleheader set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
