Western Carolina Softball Falls to Appalachian State 10-2

BOONE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (10-41, 2-19 SoCon) rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth, but dropped the single Southern Conference game with rival Appalachian State (25-25, 9-12SoCon)10-2 Saturday. The two teams will complete their season Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at noon at the Sywassink/Loyd Field.

Catamount starting pitcher Katie King yielded four runs, one in the first and second and two in the third, in the firs three frames before yielding five in the fourth inning. She was replaced by Amber Steinhardt in the fourth inning. King took the loss, going 3.1 innings, allowing seen runs on seven hits and striking out four. King falls to 2-23 on the season.

Down 9-0 entering the fifth inning, Western Carolina rallied for two runs. With one out, Robyn Burnette beat out a single to third base. Jordan Fulton followed with a single and Shemekia Scotten reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. With the bases loaded, freshman third baseman Haley Pace hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Burnette. Missy Wills hit a single to centerfield scoring Fulton for the second run of the inning.

Appalachian State's Allie Cashion hit a lead-off homerun in the bottom half of the sixth inning to shorten the game.

The Mountaineers had 15 hits in the game. Western Carolina had six hits, two by Steinhardt.
