CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Sophomore Katie Salmons scored the first goal of her career in Western Carolina women's soccer's (2-4) 2-1 loss to Xavier (4-3) Sunday, in the final day of the Catamount Classic at the Catamount Soccer Complex.

Salmons' goal was off a corner kick by Laura Greb, at the 62:15 minute mark, in the second half. Greb earned an assist on the goal.

The Catamount goal, by Salmons, was in answer to Xavier's goal just three minutes prior. After over 59 minutes without a score, in the match, the Musketeers got on the board when Jessica Brooks dribbled a ball into the box for an unassisted goal.

With the score tied at one, Xavier got the game-winning shot thanks to Brooks again. At the 68:01 minute mark, Brooks took a shot five yards out, off an assist by Leslie Boersma, to give Xavier the lead and eventual win.

After taking just one shot on goal in the first half, Western Carolina attacked the goal for five shots in the second half, for six in the match. Xavier had a balanced attack of five in the first and five in the second for a total of 10.

Salmons led WCU with two shots. Kellie Oberholtzer, Kayla Sedgley, Christine Kazonowski and Emily Lynn each had one shot on goal. Brooks and Leslie Twehues led Xavier with three shots each.

The Catamount defense hung tough in the first half, with twice in the first half, Xavier made aggressive attacks to the goal. With WCU goalkeeper Caitlin Williams defending the goal, the defense also stepped in to assist Williams, earning two team saves. Overall, the team had three saves and Williams had one. Xavier goalkeeper Jennifer Perri had two saves in the match.

In the first match of the day, Air Force defeated Mercer 1-0.

Western Carolina continues its home stand hosting Francis Marion at 7 p.m. September 17.
