CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
After a tough doubles competition at the Catamount Athletic Complex Friday afternoon, Western Carolina (1-6, 0-3) falls to Elon (4-7, 1-2).
The afternoon began with fierce competitions in both doubles contests. At No. 1 doubles, Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz and Carolina Lainez fell behind early to Jordan Johnston and Viviana Stavreva. The Catamounts pair fought back to force the tiebreak after an even first set. Iglesias Diaz and Lainez were able to put away the duo from Elon in the deciding set 7-5.
In No. 2 doubles, Western Carolina's Iza Glinska and Karen Jimenez quickly jumped ahead to a 5-3 lead over Frida Jansaker and Bryn Khoury. Then, both pairs split points to make the score 6-4. The Phoenix duo then came storming back to force another tiebreak set. The Phoenix stormed ahead to pick up the tiebreak set 7-1, allowing Elon to pick up the doubles point.
The fierce doubles competition proved to take most of the energy from the Catamounts going into singles competition. The lone victory for the Catamounts came at the No. 4 singles spot with Karen Jimenez picking up the win over Elon's Briana Berne 6-2, 6-3. The win was the third of the season and first conference win for the sophomore from Colombia.
Western Carolina finishes up its two-match conference homestand Sunday as the Catamounts take on the Davidson Wildcats at 1:00 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
